I know I want to do something with medicine, but i'm just not for sure. I know that there is just like peditricians or RN's but what 'out of the ordinary' jobs are there?
What kind of jobs are there in the medical field?
Doctors- specializing in all medical fields from cancer to obstetrics.
Nurses- specializing in critical care, nurse practitioners who can open their own practice, nurse anesthetists - by the way, they make about 5 grand a week but you need a bsn and then a masters with specialization.
Nurses aides- they basically do the "clean up" of the patients including making the beds, taking temps, the not so mentally challenging jobs.
Medical secretaries- everything that is involved in a doctor's office they are trained and may be included in their job description.
Lab techs--either blood where they actually draw the blood from the patients, or they can be on the technical end where they actually analyze and diagnose the problems with the blood.
xray techs- they do all types of xrays- pictures of bones and other body parts, they also do cat scans, mris and can specialize to be nuclear med techs- much better paying and would administer nuclear isotopes for scans and stress tests.
OR technicians- they work in the OR of course and are responsible for setting up and helping with the instruments used in the surgeries.
I hope I didn't leave anyone out--you may want to visit a hospital by meeting with the HR rep and see if you can "shadow" someone in one of the fields above to give you a better insight on what is involved in each field. The amount of schooling varies greatly and so does the amount of dedication, stamina and of course, brains.
Good luck to you, oh by the way, I'm an xray tech and my daughter is a RN with her BS going for her masters to become either a NPractitioner or anesthetist--as a nurse in our state, her school loans are paid by the hospital she works with along with the state paying the rest....nurses are in the highest of demand and getting into a good nursing program is easier than getting into med school........good luck to you.
Reply:Oh wow, there are so many careers in the health field I can't name them all here. I can think of at least 15 specialties or other jobs with just an RN title. The first site I listed covers many careers in health. Second one is all about nurses.
Reply:I assume you are looking for medical careers within the United States. If so, the Occupational Outlook Handbook has tons of information for your research. It even has trends for the next several years so you can see what the demand will be in a particular area. It also lists what type of training and certification are perhaps required.
